Ignis is quite frequently referred to as the most responsible member of Prince Noctis’ retinue. As Noctis’ advisor as well as a tactician in the employ of the royal family, Ignis is incredibly organized, meticulous and methodical. On top of keeping his own matters in order, he handles Noct’s as well. We see Ignis giving Noctis a political briefing as well as handling his schedule and keeping a close eye on his living situation in Brotherhood. Ignis takes his responsibilities quite seriously, and has expressed that he’s honored King Regis entrusted him with the prince’s care. His loyalty is without question, both to the kingdom of Lucis and Noctis himself, as well as his other companions. He is considered to be trustworthy and dependable, although his constant looking after his companions can sometimes come off as nagging.
Originally from another region, which is why his accent stands out among his companions and other Lucians, Ignis was offered special education opportunities on account of his being gifted. This resulted in his gaining the opportunity to work closely with the royal family, which his intelligence and inclination towards hard work have helped him to make excellent use of. He is bright and studious on top of being almost painfully meticulous. Logic is his weapon of choice, and he has difficulty dealing with situations where reason fails him. Always a perfectionist, he becomes frustrated when things don’t go his way or according plan, and does not care for chaos or surprises. When Prompto discovers that Ignis can see passably well without his glasses, he asks why he never takes them off, and Ignis informs him that he much prefers his world to remain crystal-clear, saying that he dislikes ambiguity.
Considered to be something of a parental figure among his close-knit group of friends, Ignis is known for being a caring person with a strong inclination towards nurturing others. Some of this stems from his falling into the role of caretaker as Noctis’ advisor, but Ignis himself admits to enjoying cooking largely because of the looks on others’ faces when they eat it. He actively enjoys looking after others, and Noctis compares him to Gladiolus’ sister Iris, saying that both she and Ignis are deeply caring souls. While his manners and formal pattern of speech might lead some people to believe he’s cold and calculating, Ignis is actually quite warm when he interacts with others. While he does consider himself to be a very private person and keeps himself well-guarded, he usually has a smile and a kind word for people-- or a snippet of playful, well-meaning sarcasm. He is as passionate about his hobbies as he is about what he considers to be his duty. His sworn loyalty to Noctis knows no bounds, even when the bond between them is tested by Ignis’ receiving a life-altering injury in the line of duty. He remains steadfast, unwilling to go back on his word or leave Noctis in his time of need.
In addition to being able to analyze enemies, Ignis is also an excellent judge of character. He is constantly wary and alert, concerned with the safety of others for both professional and personal reasons. He catches on quickly to suspicious behavior and questions the motivation of offers that strike him as odd, something that comes up frequently in the game whenever Ardyn offers the group assistance of any kind. Ignis is the first to voice his concerns about trusting the man, and repeatedly expresses the hope that they won’t have to cross paths with him again, though doing so ends up being unavoidable. Ignis tends to trust his gut when it comes to people, good or bad, though he takes care to remain open-minded and take any new information that comes up into careful consideration when assessing either a person or a situation.
The later chapters of the game show us just how deep Ignis’ loyalty runs, and that he is a man who follows his convictions without question. After a severe injury causes him to lose his sight, he refuses to allow himself to be left behind, even when Gladio argues that his continuing on with the group is suicide. Ignis believes strongly in finishing what he’s started, saying that he intends to stay with his friends, by Noctis’ side, until the very end-- and that if he can’t keep up, he will bow out, but only then. He is stubborn and determined, unwilling to let the opinions of others sway him once he’s made up his mind. He is fiercely independent, insisting on using a cane to find his way around rather than letting any of his friends lead him, and makes every effort to continue to be an asset in combat, in which he is met with success. Despite his situation, he never once complains, and never once blames Noctis for his current state even after being injured while trying to ensure the prince was able to forge a covenant with Leviathan. He puts the needs of others before his own, reigning in his own anger and distress and swallowing them down to keep himself as steadfast as he possibly can, unwilling to be anything less than the man he’s always felt himself to be. He does not want to be treated like an invalid, and is shown to deeply appreciate when others support his making his own decisions with regards to his new limitations.
Abilities:
➤ Weapons - Ignis can summon his weapons and cause them to materialize out of thin air rather than carrying them on his person, which is an extension of Noctis’ power. That said, the weapons he uses are still physical, purchasable items. He wields dual daggers as well as a polearm.
➤ Cooking - Ignis is a skilled chef who is responsible for all of the group’s meals in the game. He often devises new recipes after eating at a restaurant or discovering a new ingredient, or occasionally when seeing someone else eat something unfamiliar, choosing to put his own spin on things. He is very particular about ingredients and their nutritional value. Many of his dishes have added effects, such as temporarily boosting attack power or warding off poison or petrification.
➤ Analyze - At the onset of battle, Ignis immediately appraises the enemy and scans for weaknesses. As a tactician to the royal family as well as being Noctis’ advisor, Ignis is well-practiced in seeking out openings and weaknesses and quickly formulating plans of attack in order to best take advantage of them.
➤ Lancet - A counterattack that also drains some of an enemy’s health/energy using a polearm, healing the user.
➤ Venom Strike - Poisons a foe with a swift and nimble dagger attack.
➤ Mark - Ignis marks a number of enemies from a distance, providing Noctis with instructions to warpstrike his way through them.
➤ Regroup - Ignis summons his companions to his side in order to heal them, pulling them out of harm’s way.
➤ Enhancement - Imbues an ally’s weapon with a particular element to exploit an enemy’s weakness.
➤ Overwhelm - Concentrate ally attacks on a foe to devastating effect (Deathblow).
➤ Sagefire - Unleashes a fire attack using both daggers.
➤ Libra Elementia - Ignis zeroes in on and exploits an enemy’s elemental weakness, launching an elemental grenade from a distance.
